SYRACUSE, N.Y.Behind a game-high 19 points by senior forward Fantasia Goodwin and 15 points by junior guard Chandrea Jones, the Orange women's basketball team defeated St. Bonaventure 72-57 on Monday in the Carrier Dome. Syracuse extended its winning streak to a school-record 11 games and its 12-1 record ties the 1978-79 squad for the best start in school history.
 
The Orange, which received 13 votes (tied for 34th) in the most recent Associated Press Poll, shot 49.9 percent (31-63) from the floor, 28.6 percent (2-7) from three-point land and 61.5 percent (8-13) from the charity strip.
 
Head coach Quentin Hillsman's defense limited sophomore forward Dana Mitchell, who was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week, to only 10 points. Mitchell entered the contest 26th in the nation in scoring with 20.2 points per game.
 
The Bonnies go to 11-3 after shooting 40.4 percent (21-52) from the field, 47.1 percent (8-17) from the arc and 58.3 percent (7-12) from the free-throw line.
 
The Orange dominated the key with a rebounding advantage of 43-25, 44 points in the paint and 16 second-chance points. St. Bonaventure had 22 points in the paint and five second-chance points.
 
Goodwin, who has led the team in scoring four times this season, grabbed 10 rebounds for her fifth consecutive double-double and eighth of the season. She was 9-of-10 from the field, including 7-of-8 in the first half.
 
Jones, who earned BIG EAST Honor Roll accolades before the game, was 6-of-11 from the floor, grabbed six rebounds and made a career-high two blocks. She has scored in double-figures in 12-of-13 games this season.
 
Freshman guard Erica Morrow produced 12 points and dished out five assists, while classmate Tasha Harris scored eight points and made a career-high seven assists. Sophomore guard Nicole Michael had 10 boards and five points.
 
A rebound and a layup by Morrow at 16:51 of the first capped an 8-2 Orange run to open the game and a jumper by freshman guard Marisa Gobuty, who scored a career-high tying five points,  at 15:37 moved SU's lead to 12-4 at 15:37.
 
The Bonnies responded with 12 straight during the next 3:37 and grabbed a 16-12 lead at 11:46 after senior guard Maripier Malo made a layup. The Orange fought back and pulled the score even at 21-21 when Harris connected on a jumper at 8:43, starting a 13-3 run for Syracuse.
 
During the streak, Morrow drained SU's first three-pointer of the game after Goodwin added four straight points from down low. Morrow's three capped the run and the Orange held a 32-24 advantage at 5:39.
 
After the two teams exchanged a pair of hoops, the Orange rode a 8-0 run into the halftime and a pull-up jumper by Harris with only three seconds left gave SU a 44-29 lead.
 
Goodwin led the Orange in the first with 14 points and Morrow added 11 by making 5-of-7. The Orange shot 60.0 percent (21-35) from the floor, 33.3 percent (1-3) from behind the arc and 50 percent (1-2) from the foul line in the first half.
 
St. Bonaventure shot 44.0 percent (11-25) from the floor, 54.4 percent (6-11) from three-point range and 25.0 percent (1-4) in the first.
 
The lead changed four times in the game, all of which happened in the first half. Syracuse grabbed its largest lead of the game (23 points) at 6:16 of the second half after senior center Vaida Sipaviciute connected on a layup.
 
A three-pointer by the Bonnies sophomore guard Andrea Doneth with five ticks remaining produced the 72-57 victory for the Orange.
 
The Bonnies were led by Doneth's 11 points and Mitchell's 10. Junior guard Kateyln Murray registered nine points, and freshman guard Cara Gustafson had eight.

The Orange begins the New Year and BIG EAST play with a match-up against Louisville on Saturday, Jan. 5 at 7 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
