SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior guard Chandrea Jones combined 18 points with a career-high 14 boards to lead the Orange women's basketball team to a 79-46 victory against Northeastern on Sunday in the Carrier Dome. The double-double is Jones' second consecutive and third of the season.
The only lead the Orange would need came when Jones hit a short jumper only six seconds into the game that sparked an 11-0 run. The 5-9 guard produced seven points during the streak and senior center Vaida Sipaviciute added two.
Jones was 8-for-14 from the floor. She leads the team with 14.6 points per game and 9.25 rebounds per game. She produced her double-double in the first half with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
SU used 57.4 percent (31-54) shooting to improve to 7-1, its best start since beginning with the same mark during the 1997-98 season. Northeastern goes to 3-4 with the lost.
The Orange shot a season-best 53.8 percent from behind the three-point line. Freshman guard Erica Morrow connected on 3-of-4 and Jones and freshman guard Tasha Harris each went 2-for-4.
Morrow finished with nine points and Sipaviciute and sophomore forward Vionca Murray each added 11. Senior forward Fantasia Goodwin was second on the team with 12 points, including 10 in the second half. Nine different Orange student-athletes produced points during the game.
The Orange drained the first five of its shots and held the Huskies to 2-of-8 shooting in the opening minutes. SU added to its first half lead with an 11-3 run that lasted 3:29 between 12:52 and 9:29. Morrow had two threes and Jones added one during the run. Sipaviciute capped the charge with a lay-up off a no-look pass from Jones.
SU grabbed its largest lead of the first of 23 points (44-21) when junior guard Cintia Johnson picked off a pass from Huskies freshman forward Mia Mayberry and made the easy two at 1:36.
A three-pointer by Northeastern senior forward Shaleyse Smallwood with 38 seconds remaining produced the 44-24 halftime score.
The Orange shot 58.1 percent (18-31) in the first and 55.6 percent (5-9) from three-point range. SU forced nine turnovers and held the Huskies to 30.0 percent shooting (9-30) from the arc.
After the teams exchanged a couple of hoops in the opening moments of the second, SU went on a 12-2 run that lasted 4:21. A trey by Morrow at 13:07 capped the streak and gave the Orange a 59-31 advantage.
Northeastern scored four in a row, but Syracuse responded with nine straight, including six consecutive down-low points from Goodwin, for a 33 point lead (68-35) at 7:15.
Sipaviciute gave SU its largest lead of 34 (76-42) with a bucket at 2:18 and two free-throws by freshman guard Marisa Gobuty sealed the Orange's 79-46 win.
For the game, the Huskies were limited to 30.0 percent (18-60) from the floor, 15.4 percent (4-26) from three-point land. However, they were 100.0 percent (6-6) from the line.
Freshman guard Jasmine Crew led Northeastern with 18 points and nine rebounds. Senior guard Shaleyse Smallwood and junior guard Ashlee Feldman each added eight. Feldman also added a team-best five assists.
The Orange returns to action on Sunday, Dec. 16 when it travels to Princeton for a 2 p.m. outing.
