SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore Michael Brocks (Staatsburg, N.Y.) is the Syracuse University Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the week of January 19, 2009.

On January 16, the track and field team hosted the SU Welcome Back Meet in Manley Field House. The men recorded five first place finishes and three runner-up finishes, while the women earned 10 first place crowns and eight second place finishes.

Brocks, also a member of the Syracuse cross country team, recorded a third place finish in the meet in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 8:49.47. It was his second top five finish of the season after he finished fourth (15:41.92) in the 5K in December at the Cornell Relays.

Last season, Brocks competed in two meets. In the Syracuse Invite, he finished fifth in the 3,000m event with a time of 8:55.26 and he placed sixth in the Upstate Challenge in the 5,000m race running at a clip of 15:33.33.

Junior Annabelle Pellerin (Frankford, Ontario) is the Syracuse University Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the week of January 19, 2009.

Pellerin, also a member of the Syracuse volleyball team, recorded a BIG EAST qualifying leap of 1.65m at the SU Welcome Back Meet on Friday, January 16. She led the field for a first place finish.

Earlier this season at the Cornell Relays, Pellerin also recorded a top finish in the high jump at 1.68m.

During the fall, Pellerin helped the SU volleyball team to its seventh BIG EAST Championship trip under head coach Jing Pu, a 17-15 overall record and a sixth-place conference finish. During her three-year career, Pellerin has 128 kills and 28 total blocks.

Brocks, a management and technology major, and Pellerin, a biology major, and the rest of the Syracuse University track and field team will be back in action on January 24 at the Cornell Upstate Challenge.
