Orange Swimmers Compete at Fifth Annual Copa Coqui Invitational

SAN JUAN, P.R. –
The Syracuse men's and women's swimming team competed in the 2009 Copa Coqui Puerto Rico Invitational on Sunday, January 4. The Orange joined U.S. teams including Michigan, Yale, Army, Fairfield, Cornell and Houston in addition to a number of local universities, while competing over long-course meters.
 
Junior Boldiszar Kiss and sophomores Kuba Kotynia and Berk Kahraman were the top finishers for the Orange men. Kiss finished second in the 100 fly (59.40) and third in the 200 IM (2:18.88). Kotynia and Kahraman also recorded second-place finishes. Kotynia finished the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.43, while Kahraman touched the wall in the 100 backstroke in 1:03.80.
 
Junior Alex Taraskin competed in the 100 free (55.62) and the 50 free (25.55) finishing fourth and fifth, respectively. Junior Arda Isiksalan joined Kahraman in the backstroke event finishing eighth in 1 minute, 5.14 seconds. Senior Peter Gollands rounded out the top men's performers swimming the 100 fly in 1:01.83, good enough for ninth place in the event.
 
Leading the Orange women was senior Catrina Roth who recorded a fourth place time of 1:09.14 in the 100 backstroke. Sophomore Natalie Mazzetta was the top finisher for SU in both the 100 fly (1:08.43/11th) and the 200 IM (2:35.65/12th). Another sophomore, Stephanie Kuczynski, led the Syracuse women in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:22.13. Junior Katelyn Schumacher was the SU leader in the women's 50 free with a 29.73 second performance.
 
The Orange will be back in action on Saturday, January 24 when it hosts BIG EAST foe Seton Hall. Diving is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. with swimming beginning at 12 p.m.
