Syracuse goes on the road for its third consecutive week for a pair of contests against Hockey East opponents this weekend. The team will battle the Connecticut Huskies on Friday, October 16 at 7 p.m. before traveling to Providence to face the Friars on Saturday at 4 p.m. While it is the first meeting between the schools, SU is 0-1-1 against Hockey East Conference opponents after last weekend's 3-3 draw at No. 6 Boston College and 2-1 loss at No. 3 New Hampshire.
Junior co-captain Stefanie Marty and freshman Isabel Menard earned College Hockey America Weekly Honors for their performances in last week's games. Marty had three points in SU's tie at BC and one-goal loss at New Hampshire. With the Orange trailing 3-0 against BC at the beginning of the second period, Marty connected on a power-play goal to put SU on the board and then assisted on the next goal. Menard scored the game-tying goal to force overtime and eventually settle the score, 3-3.
Scouting the Huskies
Connecticut is 1-2-1 after beating St. Lawrence, 2-0, and losing, 4-0, to Clarkson last weekend. In 2008-09 the Huskies finished with a 19-12-4 record and was tied for fourth in the Hockey East Conference. The front line is without last year's leading scorer Dominique Thibault, and relies on junior forward Brittany Murphy, who has one goal and one assist on the season. Sophomore goaltender Alexandra Garcia returns to the net, maintaining a goals against average of 2.20 and a saves percentage of .904 so far this season. Head coach Heather Lindstad has been at the helm of Huskies women's ice hockey since the program began and has accrued a 120-138-34 record in nine seasons.
Scouting the Friars
The Friars are 2-1-1 on the season after losing to Clarkson, 3-2, and playing to a 3-3 tie at St. Lawrence. Last season, Providence went 17-16-3 and reached the Hockey East Tournament for the seventh-consecutive year, where it defeated Connecticut, 3-0 in the first-ever Conference quarterfinal. It is one of only two programs to reach the postseason in all seven years of Hockey East play. The team returns last year's leading scorer, Laura Vaharanta, who finished with 31 points (16 goals, 15 assists). This year's squad is led by sophomore forward Ashley Cottrell, who has four goals and one assist, while sophomore goaltender Genevieve Lacasse has a goals against average of 1.71 and .929 saves percentage.
