KENOSHA, Wis. – The Syracuse men’s cross country team captured the program’s first BIG EAST Championship on Saturday. The Orange upset the defending BIG EAST champion, No. 10 Georgetown to claim the crown. Sophomore Pat Dupont led the Orange men in the 8,000-meter race with the team’s fastest time (24:51), placing fourth overall at the conference Championship. The race was hosted by Marquette University at the Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course for the first time.
“It was a great day for Syracuse University cross country,” said head coach Chris Fox. “It was a historic win by a fantastic group of young men.”
The Orange improved on last year’s fifth-place finish at the BIG EAST Championship. The highest the team ever placed was in 1980, when the team placed third.
The championship team was comprised of five Orange men who finished in the top 15. Senior Jeff Scull (25:11), sophomore Tito Medrano (25:12), and seniors Dan Busby (25:15) and Brad Miller rounded out the top finishers for Syracuse. Sophomore Forrest Misenti (25:31) and junior Steve Murdock (25:34) added to SU’s first conference victory.
On the women’s side, the Orange placed third, while defending conference champion No. 2 Villanova won its second-straight and No. 4 West Virginia took second. Syracuse’s top runner was junior Katie Hursey who finished eighth overall with a time of 21:30. SU improved on last year's fifth-place finish.
The Orange will compete in the NCAA Northeast Regional in Boston, Mass. on Saturday, Nov. 14.
