SYRACUSE, N.Y.
– Freshman Erin Burns scored the game-winning goal as time expired in the second period as the Orange swept Union, 3-2, on November 29. Syracuse advances to 8-6-1 on the season, its highest win percentage in school history, while the Dutchwomen are 2-11-1.

"We needed to refocus in the third period," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "We tried to get our kids to play with a little more emotion and determination because we really wanted to win. It was nothing against the way Union was playing because I thought they did a really good job."

The game remained scoreless for the first 6:08, but coinciding penalties on Burns and senior Brittaney Maschmeyer gave the Dutchwomen the 5-3 advantage, which allowed Rhianna Kurio to open up the scoring. Syracuse answered less than three minutes later when junior Julie Rising found Maschmeyer, who passed to sophomore Megan Skelly. Skelly hit the puck, which grazed over the helmet of Kate Gallagher and hit the back of the net to tie the game, 1-1, with less than nine minutes remaining.

The Orange held the 2-1 edge after senior netminder Lucy Schoedel tallied the first goaltender assist in SU history. Schoedel teamed up with Maschmeyer on the assist to Rising, who shot straight into the net and over the head of Gallagher. While trailing for its first time, Union's Marissa Gentile tied the game back up, 2-2, at 6:25. However, SU fought back as time expired in the second period. Maschmeyer and freshman Jessica Sorensen found themselves in a scramble in the front of the Union net, but Maschmeyer was able to feed the puck to Burns, who put it in during the final second.

Union attempted to get back in the game, but the Syracuse defense shut the Dutchwomen down in the final period to settle the final score, 3-2.

Schoedel finished with 20 saves on 22 shots, while Gallagher turned away 25-of-28.

The Orange will welcome CHA conference foe Wayne State to Tennity Ice Pavilion for a two-game series on Friday, December 4 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, December 5 at 2 p.m.
