BERKELEY, Calif. – Junior Halley Quillinan tied her career high with six goals and senior Katie Rowan recorded a team-high eight points to lead No. 3 Syracuse to an 18-2 victory against California in Berkeley, Calif. on Sunday, Feb. 22. The win improves Syracuse’s record to 3-0, while California goes to 2-2.

“The defense continued what it started in the second half against Stanford,” said head coach Gary Gait. “They brought chemistry and intensity the whole game. On offense, getting multiple players involved will be key for us down the road so we are not predictable.”

The Orange took control early, scoring eight goals in the first 9:15 of the contest. Rowan netted Syracuse’s first goal just 1:03 into the game. Junior Christina Dove converted a free position attempt and then assisted on Megan Mosenson’s goal to give SU a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Elise Terracciano scored on a free position before Quillinan recorded her first two goals of the game just more than a minute apart. Rowan and Dove each scored again as Syracuse took an 8-0 lead. After Emily Abbood scored California’s first goal of the contest with 18:45 remaining in the half, Rowan added a pair of goals and Mosenson found the back of the net for a second time as the Orange held an 11-2 advantage at halftime.

The second half featured more Orange offense. Quillinan scored the first goal of the half on an assist from Rowan to increase SU’s lead to 12-2 with 21:52 remaining. Rowan found the back of the net before feeding Quillinan again to give the Orange a 14-2 advantage. Quillinan added two more goals before seniors Bridget Looney and Awehiyo Thomas netted goals for the 18-2 final.

While the offense was clicking, Syracuse’s defense limited California to just 10 shots and two goals. It’s the fewest goals the Orange has allowed in a game since the 2006 season when it defeated Binghamton, 21-2, in the Carrier Dome. Syracuse shut out the Golden Bears in the second half, marking the first time since the Dartmouth game last season that SU has held an opponent scoreless in half. Sophomore goalkeeper Liz Hogan made six saves.

Rowan finished with five goals and three assists, while Mosenson added two goals and two assists as seven different players scored for Syracuse.

Syracuse returns home to host No. 4 Virginia on Friday at 4 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. The game is part of a doubleheader with the Orange men’s lacrosse team, which also takes on the Cavaliers at 7 p.m. Fans can purchase tickets for Friday’s doubleheader at SUathletics.com.
