SAN DIEGO - The 13th-ranked Syracuse men's crew squad kicked off its 2009 spring season with a fourth–place showing in the Men's Collegiate Varsity Invitational A Copley Cup at varsity eight boat boat of Ryan Patton (bow), Tyson Bry (2-seat), Brian Azeff (3-seat), Dan Turner (4-seat), Dan Berry (5-seat), Martin Etem (6-seat), Vince Berry (7-seat), Mike Gennaro (stroke) and Ken Marfilius (cox) finished with 2,000-meter course with a time of 5:58.52.
“Equal parts disappointment and encouragement about the race,” head coach Dave Reischman said. “We are disappointed that we did not make the grand final, but when you finish a length off the second and third-ranked crews in our league, it’s a good marker as to where we are and where we need to be. We need to continue to improve and work on the little things that will close that gap.”
No. 1 Washington won the race with a time of 5:51.65. No. 7 Harvard finished second with a time of 5:54.84 and No. 4 Brown finished third with a time of 5:55.28.
The Orange finished ahead of No. 15 Oregon State and Purdue.
SU will row at the Crown Point Shores Park at Mission Bay aging tomorrow in the Men's Collegiate Varsity International Petite race against Yale, Michigan, Oregon State and Purdue on Sunday at noon ET. The Orange won this race a year ago.
