No. 8 SU Takes Second in V8 Petite Final

WORCESTER, MASS. – The Syracuse men’s crew team had one boat reach the grand final and won the freshman eight petite final on Sunday, May 10 at the 2009 Eastern Sprints. The varsity eight placed second in the petite final, as did the second varsity eight. The third varsity eight finished fifth in the grand final.
 
“I saw a lot of good things today,” head coach Dave Reischman said. “The guys were disappointed to not make the final, but I can’t fault their effort as they all raced very well. I think we just let the morning race results linger too long.”
 
Syracuse’s varsity eight boat finished third in Heat No. 1 with a time of 5:48.312. The Orange finished behind Wisconsin and Boston University. George Washington finished fourth and Navy placed fifth. In the petite final, SU took second at 5:51.014. Columbia won the race, but the Orange finished ahead of GWU, Navy, Dartmouth and MIT.
 
SU’s third varsity eight took third (6:11.393) in Heat No. 1 behind Yale and Harvard to qualify for the grand final. The Orange rowed to a fifth place finish in the grand final with a time of 6:16.993.
 
The Orange freshman eight placed third in Heat N. 2 at a clip of 5:56.201. Brown took first, while Wisconsin was second. Syracuse’s boat rallied in the afternoon winning the petite final recording a time of 5:56.263. SU finished ahead of Navy, MIT, Northeastern, BU, Dartmouth and GWU.
 
After placing third in Heat No. 1 registering a time of 5:55.866, the second varsity eight secured second place in the petite final. With a time of 5:59.957, the Orange finished behind Yale, but ahead of Penn, Columbia, Northeastern and GWU.
 
Syracuse concludes the cup season when it hosts Dartmouth on May 17. The Orange will compete for the Packard Cup. SU has taken home the Packard trophy 24 times dating back to 1960. The Orange has claimed the trophy the past three years.
