Syracuse University women basketball players Nicole Michael, Vionca Murray and Tyler Ash spent their morning at the Central New York Food Bank unloading bins of food from a P&C truck into the CNY Food Bank. The event was the culmination of the “Bins for Wins” campaign. For every Orange home win P&C donated a bin of food to the CNY Food Bank on behalf of the Syracuse women’s basketball team.
“It is really important to give back to the community. We have an opportunity to help others and give back and I think this is a really important cause,” Murray said. “We are always focusing on community service, in fact we were awarded this year’s ‘Cuse Cares Award. Getting out in the community is a good experience and you learn a lot while doing it.”
The Orange won 10 home games last season and was very happy to see those wins helping the community.
“It is very important to give back to the community,” Michael said. “The community supports us, we must support them. I love working in the community. It makes me feel as though I am doing something very productive. ”
It was also a good day for the Penn Traffic Company (P&C), who provided the food to the CNY Food Bank on behalf of Syracuse University.
“The importance of giving to the food bank is the reason we do it. We are a food retailer and it’s nice to be involved in the community by sponsoring Syracuse University Athletics,” said Kathleen Allen, Director of Marketing and Consumer Affairs for the Penn Traffic Company. “It is even more important to give back to the community tenfold. So, by partnering with SU, and instead of just hanging a sign in the building, we like to get involved actively by giving back and tying our efforts in with the food bank. It’s what we are about.”
Ash agreed that it was an important thing to do, not only for community, but for Syracuse women’s basketball fans.
“It feels good,” Ash said. “It’s good for the community and helps us give back to our fans.”
