WORCESTER, MASS. – After moving up to No. 8 in the USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association NCAA Division I Varsity Eight Coaches Poll this week, the Syracuse men’s rowing team travels to Worcester, Mass. Sunday, May 10 for the 2009 Eastern Sprints.
The Orange varsity eight, ranked sixth in the EARC Heavyweight Varsity Eight Poll, is in heat No. 1 which is set to launch at 10:32 a.m. Sunday on Lake Quinsigamond. Syracuse is set to compete against No. 1 Wisconsin, No. 10 Boston University, No. 15 George Washington, No. 18 Penn and Rutgers. The Orange has already defeated BU this season in the Conlan Cup on April 25.
Last season, the varsity eight finished fourth in the petite final and SU won the second varsity eight petite final. The Orange freshman eight reached the grand final and finished in sixth place. Syracuse has not medaled since 1959, when the varsity eight came in second.
SU’s second varsity eight, which is ranked seventh in the EARC Heavyweight Poll, hits the water at 9:52 a.m. in Heat No. 1. The Orange races against Brown, BU, Navy and George Washington. Syracuse faced BU earlier this season in the Conlan Cup and finished second behind the Terriers. Last year at the Eastern Sprints, Syracuse took third in the second heat before winning its second consecutive petite final.
The third varsity eight is SU’s first boat to take to the water on Sunday. The Orange is in Heat No. 1 and is set to take off at 8:04 a.m. against Harvard, Yale, Navy and Dartmouth.
Syracuse’s freshman eight ranks fifth in the EARC Heavyweight Poll and launches in Heat No. 2 at 9:08 a.m. The Orange is set to challenge Brown, Wisconsin, MIT, George Washington and Rutgers. Last season, the freshman eight placed second in its heat to advance to the grand final where it earned a sixth place finish.
Following the Eastern Sprints, the Orange hosts Dartmouth in the Packard Cup on May 17.
