IRA Day 1: All Boats Still in Contention

SACRAMENTO – The Syracuse University varsity eight won its repechage heat during the first day of competition at the 2009 IRA Regatta on Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif. The 11th-ranked Orange (6:01.852) was six seconds better than No. 16 Oregon State (6:07.687) in its victory. With its victory, SU advances to B semifinal tomorrow at noon PT.

 

“Everything went according to plan today,” head coach Dave Reischman said. “We were seeded No. 11 coming in and I thought that was a fair assessment. We obviously want to finish better than that and our plan today was to get into the semifinals with as little effort as possible and then take our shot.”

 

The varsity eight will face No. 2 Brown, No. 3 Stanford, No. 6 Washington, No. 7 Cornell and No. 8 Northeastern tomorrow. The top three will advance to Saturday’s grand final.

 

The second varsity eight placed third in its elimination heat with a time of 6:13.997. California was first and Wisconsin was second with times of 5:59.979 and 6:09.251, respectively.

 

The Orange second varsity eight takes on Boston University, George Washington and Dartmouth tomorrow in repechage heat three at 10:36 a.m. PT. The winner advances to the second varsity eight grand final on Saturday.

 

The freshman eight also placed third in its elimination heat. SU crossed the finish line in 6:11.34. Harvard won the race in 6:01.8 and California finished second with a time of 6:04.1.

 

The Syracuse freshman eight will battle Wisconsin, Dartmouth, Boston University and Gonzaga tomorrow in repechage heat three at 10 a.m. PT. The winner advances to Saturday’s freshman eight grand final.

 

The SU coxed open four finished fourth in its elimination heat. The Orange posted a time of 7:04.14. Washington (6:51.3) won the race, with Navy (6:56.35) finishing second and Princeton (7:02.5) third.

 

The Orange coxed open four will face Navy, Cornell and George Washington tomorrow in repechage heat two at 8:36 a.m .PT. The winner advances to the coxed open four grand final on Saturday.
