Orange Looks to Return to Winning Ways in Norfolk, Va.

The ninth-ranked Syracuse University field hockey team (3-1) travels to Norfolk, Va. for a pair of contests against No. 17 Old Dominion (1-3) on Saturday, September 11 at 1 p.m. and No. 3 Virginia (4-0) on Sunday, September 12 at noon.

 

Saturday’s game marks Old Dominion’s home opener. Syracuse defeated No. 14 Ohio State, 2-1, in the Buckeyes’ home opener on September 3. Virginia plays Ohio State in Norfolk before the SU/ODU game on Saturday.

 

The Orange is looking for its third 5-1 start in the past four years. SU was 5-1 to begin the 2007 and 2009 seasons. Syracuse began the 2008 season 14-0.

Old Dominion Series Notes                                     

Syracuse holds a 2-1 advantage in the all-time series against the Lady Monarchs, including a 5-0 victory to open the 2008 season and a 2-1 overtime victory in 2009.

 

The Orange won a 5-0 contest against Old Dominion on August 31, 2008 in a neutral site contest at Ursinus’ Eleanor Frost Snell Alumnae Field. The Orange was held scoreless, 0-0, at halftime, but scored five unanswered goals in the second half. Two-time All-American Lindsey Conrad scored three goals and All-American Martina Loncarica tallied two for the Orange. Shannon Taylor registered two assists, with Shelby Schraden and Maggie Befort each notching one.

 

Conrad scored with 1:23 remaining in overtime to lift Syracuse to a 2-1 victory against Old Dominion on September 11, 2009 at J.S. Coyne Stadium. Schraden had the other SU goal. Amy Kee and Befort each recorded an assist in the contest.

 
Virginia Series Notes                                                 

Virginia leads the all-time series, 1-0, winning the only meeting between the two schools in Charlottesville, Va. in 1993.


Scouting the Orange                                                   
Syracuse is led by two-time All-American Lindsey Conrad’s three goals and freshman midfielder Leonie Geyer’s four assists. Both have recorded a team-best six points.

 

Sophomore back Amy Kee and senior back Maggie Befort both have registered five points off two goals and one assist. All-American Martina Loncarica and junior forward Heather Susek both have tallied four points off one goal and two assists.

 

Senior forward Kristin Girouard has notched three points off one goal and one assist. Senior forward Shelby Schraden and sophomore back Iona Holloway have each scored once.


Sophomore goalkeeper Leann Stiver has played all but eight minutes for the Orange. She has a 1.56 goal-against-average and a .706 saves percentage.

 

Befort has scored a school record 110 points in her four-year career. Befort is also second on SU’s all-time assist chart with 46.

 

Conrad is now tied with Kelly Larkin (1988-91) for second on SU’s all-time goals scored list with 41. She is also second on SU’s all-time poinst list with 100.

 

Loncarica ranks first on SU’s all-time assists list with 50. She is also sixth on the all-time points list with 92.

 

The Orange is now 50-36-12 all-time in overtime contests.

 

Syracuse’s 2-1 overtime loss to Kent State on September 4 was its first loss to a non-ranked team since October 25, 2007 (52 games ago).

 

SU’s 22.75 shots per game is the best in the BIG EAST by 4.50 shots. Syracuse’s 10.50 penalty corners a game is also best in the league by 2.75 per game.

 

Geyer’s 6.67 shots per game and four assists are tops in the BIG EAST.

  

Syracuse has been raked in the top 10 for 23 consecutive weeks. SU was ranked 17th on August 28, 2008, but moved up to number seven a week later and has not dropped out  of the top 10 since. 

 

Scouting the Lady Monarchs                                   

No. 17 Old Dominion (1-3) has started the season with three losses against ranked opponents. The Lady Monarchs opened the season with a 4-0 loss at No. 18 Penn State and went on to lose to No. 2 Maryland, 3-1, and No. 3 Virginia, 5-2. ODU did defeat American, 2-1, in the second game of the season. 

 

The Lady Monarchs are led by Loran Hatch’s team-best three goals and six points. Paige Clutter and Alyschia Conn have each dished out a team-high three assists. Marla Petriello has seen every second in cage and has recorded a 4.18 goals-against-average and a .536 saves percentage.

 

Scouting the Cavaliers                                               
No. 3 Virginia (4-0) enters the weekend having outscored its four opponents, 14-2. The Cavaliers have also outshot its opponents, 89-39 and hold a 40-29 advantage in penalty corners. 

Virginia is led by Paige Selenski’s team-best nine goals and 18 points. Taylor Swezey has dished out a team-high four assists. Kim Kastuk has seen the majority of action in the cage and has recorded a 0.86 goals-against-average and a .889 saves percentage.  
            

Last Weekend in Review                                      

The Orange went 1-1 this past week in two overtime contests.

 

Syracuse passed its first tough test of the 2010 season with its 2-1 overtime win at No. 14 Ohio State on September 3 at Buckeye Varsity Field. Maggie Befort and two-time All-American Lindsey Conrad provided the scores for the ‘Cuse. Freshman midfielder Leonie Geyer recorded her team-best fourth assist of the year and sophomore back Amy Kee registered her first.

 

The Orange suffered its first defeat of the 2010 campaign, losing to Kent State, 2-1, in overtime on September 5 at Ohio State’s Buckeye Varsity Field. Kee gave SU a 1-0 lead 19:55 into the game. Loncarica provided the assist on the play.
