Syracuse has jumped two spots and moved into the number one position in the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today polls announced on Monday.
The Orange own an unblemished 10-0 record this season. Syracuse defeated George Washington in its most recent outing on Saturday, 85-50. Kentucky, last week's number one, lost at Indiana on Saturday. Former number two Ohio State was defeated at Kansas.
Syracus received 51-of-65 first-place votes in the Associated Press Poll. In the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, Syracuse received 28-of-30 first-place votes. The Buckeyes earned the other two.
Syracuse is one of nine teams in Division I basketball who are unbeaten:
Syracuse (10-0)
Illinois (10-0)
Murray State (10-0)
Indiana (9-0)
Louisville (9-0)
Marquette (9-0)
Missouri (9-0)
Xavier (8-0)
Baylor (7-0)
The last time Syracuse was ranked first was during the 2009-10 campaign. The Orange was number one in the poll released on March 1, 2010.
SU is the most recent BIG EAST Conference club to earn the top position during the regular season. Defending NCAA Champion Connecticut was first in the final ESPN/USA Today Poll, released following the national title game. Likewise, Syracuse was rated first in the same poll following it's NCAA championship in 2003.
The Orange also reached the top spot in 1987-88 and 1989-90.
Syracuse's next game is on Saturday, December 17, at North Carolina State.
