Kohl Homer Lifts Orange to Victory

Junior catcher Lacey Kohl hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh to lead Syracuse (10-2) to a 4-3 comeback win against rv/rv Fresno State (5-1) on Saturday afternoon in the Cathedral Classic. The 10-2 record marks program-best start for the Orange.

Junior catcher Lacey Kohl hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh to lead Syracuse (10-2) to a 4-3 comeback win against rv/rv Fresno State (5-1) on Saturday afternoon in the Cathedral Classic. The 10-2 record marks program-best start for the Orange.

Senior Rachel Helman led the Orange offensively, going 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles, an RBI and a pair of runs scored. Freshman Kealy McMullen and junior Stephanie Watts also recorded hits in the contest with Watts scoring a run.

Junior pitcher Jenna Caira earned the win, improving to 7-1 on the year allowing two earned runs while striking out three through 7.0 innings.

Fresno State scored first, plating a run off two hits and an error in the bottom of the first.

After three scoreless innings, Syracuse regained control with a pair of runs off two hits and two errors in the top of the fifth. Watts reached on an error with two outs in the inning and a double by the left field line by Helman scored Watts to tie the game, 1-1. Junior Lisaira  Daniels seconded the feat, doubling down the left field line to score Helman and give Syracuse a 2-1 edge.

The Bulldogs evened the playing field with a run off of two hits in the bottom of the fifth and took the lead with another run off two hits in the bottom of the sixth, 3-2. The Orange rose to the challenge in the top of the seventh as Helman doubled to right center, putting the tying run on base before Kohl homered over the left center fence to put Syracuse back on top, 4-3.

Syracuse concludes Cathedral Classic action on Sunday, February 27 when it faces Nevada at 12 p.m. ET and Cal State Fullerton at 2 p.m. ET.
