Tom Coughlin, the eighth-year head coach of the New York Giants and 1967 Syracuse graduate, led the Giants to their second Super Bowl appearance in five seasons with a 20-17 overtime victory at San Francisco in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday night, and will battle the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI on February 5 at 6:20 p.m.
The Giants have won their past five games, including postseason victories against Atlanta (24-2) and top-seeded Green Bay (37-20) before defeating the 49ers last night in the NFC title game. Coughlin is 77-54 during his time in New York, including an 11-7 mark in postseason play.
Should the Giants advance and win a second Super Bowl under him on Feb. 5, Coughlin would become just the 13th coach to win two or more Super Bowls and just the eighth to do so without losing one. He already has a better playoff winning percentage than Tom Landry, Don Shula and Bill Parcells, who, like Coughlin, was the Giants’ coach for eight years.
Coughlin won his first career Super Bowl during the 2007 season against the previously undefeated Patriots in a 17-14 come-from-behind victory. At the time, they were just the second team to win the Super Bowl after winning three postseason games on the road, and were the lowest-seeded NFC team to with the Super Bowl since the NFL began seeding team in 1990.
Coughlin was a three-year letterwinner with the Orange, and was part of a ferocious SU backfield that included College and Pro Football Hall of Famers Larry Csonka and Floyd Little.
