Syracuse men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim is two victories away from tying North Carolina’s Dean Smith for third all-time on the list of winningest Division I coaches.
Boeheim notched win number 877 on Monday night when the Orange won at Cincinnati, 60-53. the triumph pushed him past Kentucky’s Adolph Rupp to become the fourth winningest coach in NCAA Division I history. Now only Smith has more wins at one Division I school than Boeheim.
Boeheim has the second most wins amongst active Division I coaches, behind only Mike Krzyzewski, who owns 916 that he accumulated at Army and Duke. On the all-time ledger, Krzyzewski (916), Bobby Knight (902) and Smith (879) are ahead of the Syracuse mentor.
Earlier this season, Boeheim recorded his 34th 20-win season, which is the most 20-win seasons by a coach in NCAA Division I history.
With an all-time record of 877-302 (.744), Boeheim is 10th among active Division I coaches in winning percentage. He is third among active Division 1I coaches in games (1,179). Boeheim is seventh all-time in Division 1 NCAA Tournament wins with 45, in 28 NCAA Tournament appearances.
