Jarret Eaton, owner of the nation's fastest time in the 60-meter hurdles, was named to the Bowerman Award Watch List on Tuesday. The Bowerman is awarded annually to the top male and female track & field athletes of the year. Eaton is one of 12 male student-athletes currently on the Watch List, and is the only member from a BIG EAST institution.
Eaton has broken the school record in the 60-meter hurdles twice this season, first at the Cornell Upstate Challenge before the Penn State National Invitational last weekend with a time of 7.49 seconds, the fastest collegiate time since 1997 and the world-leading time this season.
"Jarret has trained very hard and stayed healthy to this point," said SU assistant coach
Dave Hegland, who works with the Orange sprinters and hurdlers. "We are excited about his performances thus far, but I know he is focused on the championship meets at the end of the season. We look forward to seeing him continue to improve."
Eaton, a native of Abington, Pa., was named the BIG EAST Male Track Athlete of the Week in each of the past two weeks. He has already qualified for the BIG EAST, IC4A and NCAA Indoor Championships later this season.
The Orange will return to the track this weekend at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the Armory in New York City, which begins on Friday afternoon.
