TEMPE, Ariz.
Jasmine Watson hit two home runs, but No. 3 California (4-0) topped Syracuse (3-2) in SU’s final game of the Kajikawa Classic on Sunday afternoon, 6-3, at the Tempe Sports Complex.

Watson provided Syracuse with a 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning as she hit a solo shot to open the inning. The sophomore took Cal pitcher to Ariana Erceg to left center on the first pitch of the at bat.

The Orange would hold onto that lead until the top of the fifth when Cal scored three runs on two hits, including a two run double by Britt Vonk.

The Bears would add insurance in the top of the seventh with three more runs. Cal loaded the bases with one out, which was followed by two-straight walks by pitcher Jenna Caira, followed by a sac fly.

Watson would hit her second round-tripper in the bottom half of the seventh. Lisaira Daniels singled for Syracuse, then was brought in with Watson’s homer. The Orange rally would end with a groundout to end the game. The Syracuse offense only managed three hits on the afternoon.

Caira allowed six runs on five hits while striking out five and walking nine. She threw 132 pitches in the complete game effort.

“We showed some fight today. As hitters we made adjustments, and that was the first time this tournament we committed to those adjustments,” head coach Leigh Ross said. “Overall, the weekend gave us a chance to see some things we need to continue to work, and all these games are good experience for later on.”

The Orange is off next weekend and then will head to Palm Springs, Calif, for the Cathedral Classic. The Orange will play Pacific, Northwestern, UC Davis, Arizona and UCLA while in California on Feb, 24-26.
