NEW YORK - It was a busy and successful weekend for the Orange at the 2012 Big East Indoor Track and Field Championships held this past weekend at the Armory. The Squad was represented by 38 athletes competing in 14 different events and returned home with three gold medals and a number of other podium finishes and noteworthy performances.
Senior
Jarret Eaton led the team against a competitive field with a meet record performance of 7.70 seconds to win the 60-meter hurdles on Sunday. Eaton edged out Cincinnati’s Terrence Somervill and Pitt’s Josh Thompson for the victory. In the women’s 60-meter dash,
Flings Owusu-Agyapong took home the gold in just 7.41 seconds, beating the field by 0.08 seconds in the finals. Junior
Frank Taylor also contributed to the success in the long jump. Taylor leaped to victory in a jump of 7.44 meters on his final attempt, setting a new personal record in the event.
There were a number of other podium finishes among the squad this weekend. In the 200-meter dash, sophomore
Jaquan Holland put up a fight to the finish, ultimately placing second to Pittsburgh’s Brycen Spratling in a time of 21.46, his best of the season. Holland also competed in the men’s 60-meter dash and finished third in the event. On the women’s side, sophomore
Molly Malone placed second in another close race with a time of 2:48.58 in the 1,000-meter run, and senior
Heather Stephens also raced to a close second in the 3000-meter run in a time of 9:41.33, just two seconds behind Georgetown’s Emily Infeld who took home the title.
Other noteworthy performances include freshman
Jace Lowry who edged out teammate
Martin Hehir for the third place finish in the men’s 5000-meter run, finishing in 14:13.09. Senior
Lauren Penney also took home the bronze in the women’s event with a time of 16:38.31.
