LA MANGA, Spain -- Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon is serving as an assistant coach for the United States' Under-23 women's soccer national team for the Four Nations Competition being held in La Manga, Spain.
The squad is made up of the top collegiate players and post-collegiate players in the country. Wheddon, who has previously served as an assistant coach on both the U.S. men's and women's national teams, will assist head coach Randy Waldrum of Notre Dame in evaluating the players on the trip. The U.S. team will face England, Sweden and Norway during the tournament.
"It's an honor to be asked to represent our country at any level," Wheddon said. "The fact that we will compete against three exceptional teams makes it even more exciting. Coach Waldrum has assembled a great group of players for this event and it will be a great experience to work with them."
Wheddon is in his fourth year at the helm of the Syracuse women's soccer program. In 2011, he guided the Orange its first BIG EAST Tournament appearance since 2005 and its most league victories since 1998.
