Mautino had a successful career at Syracuse. He won the Joe Alexander Award for Excellence in Football, Scholarship, and Citizenship. He also achieved Academic All-America recognition. Mautino was the captain of his team in his senior year. In 1959 he helped his team to an undefeated, 11-0 season.
