Syracuse Student-Athlete Quotes (03/03/08)
Syracuse vs. West Virginia
March 3, 2008
Carrier Dome – Syracuse, N.Y.

Erica Morrow, Freshman, G
On the game
“I think it was a great win. All year, when we’ve played ranked teams, and we haven’t always come out with a good win. To come off the last game of the regular season with a win, it feels great.”

On the NCAA tournament
“We’re not on the selection committee, so we’re not 100 percent sure. But I think winning against the No. 13 team in the country as your last game is real strong evidence. It was a real good win and I hope they take it into consideration.”

On if this was the best win of the season
“I think as a team we come together in situations when we need to come together and play real strong.  I don’t know if it’s the best win, but it was definitely the best emotional win of the season. It was the end of the season, and we needed this win after the loss at Rutgers. So I think it was more emotional than anything.”

On the amount of scoring
“Our staff does a real good job with scouting other teams. So, as long as we prepare and execute our game plan we will be in good shape. We’re a good scoring team, it’s just defense.  We have to defend the ball. If we know our personnel, and do everything we need to do, I think we’ll be alright.”

On the team’s confidence
“Coming off of any win in the BIG EAST is always good for the team’s confidence.  We’re just pulling together and getting back to the basketball we were playing at the beginning of the year.  We had to make a few adjustments, but I think overall we’re coming together as a team and playing basketball.”

On her amount of points in the game
“I have to give all the credit to my teammates. Everyone was scoring, so they kind of backed off me a little bit. They were getting me the ball, and when I missed them, they would tell me to keep shooting, and keep being aggressive. I have to give the credit to my team and my coaches for giving me the confidence to keep going.”

On senior night
“It was their last game at the Dome. Senior night is always a great night. Our seniors are the core of this team. Our newcomers are just the supporting cast. They started Syracuse as being a good basketball school, and we came and wanted to help them.”

On the team’s accomplishments
“I think this team has accomplished a lot. I think we’ve shown people that we are a good program and that we are a great bunch of girls that work hard and compete. That’s all coach ever asks of us to do, come in day in and day out and just play hard. As a program, as a team, as a school, we’ve turned a corner in women’s basketball.”

On winning by a large margin going into the postseason
“It’s a confidence boost. We’re getting back to what we used to do, doing the little things and being a team that goes hard and plays hard.”

Chandrea Jones, Junior, G
On the game
“It feels good. Like Erica [Morrow] said, it really boosts our confidence for the next game.”

On beating a ranked opponent
“It brings our confidence back after going through a slump. So, it brought us back to the basketball we were playing before.”

On the team’s play in the game
“I think we’ve been more aggressive than we were in the games before.”

On her amount of scoring
“I have to give it to my teammates. Coach told me to make plays, and that’s what I do. They get me the ball, and they trust me.”

On West Virginia’s play
“They played hard too. It was just our night, Erica (Morrow) and I, but they definitely played hard too.”

On the importance of this game
“I think since the beginning, we all wanted this game. So we just worked hard to get it.”

On Coach [Hillsman] wanting her to shoot the ball
“He just wanted me to be aggressive. I can’t blame him, but I just look for my teammates.”

On how good the team can be when they play good defense
“We can be really good. If we do what the coaches ask us to do, then we should be alright.”
