Assisting Student-Athletes at Syracuse University
Choice..Integrity..EXCELLENCE..Commitment..Accountability
The Syracuse University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is as concerned about personal and academic success as it is with athletic achievement. We are aware of the challenges that today's student-athletes face when dealing with the demands placed upon them in the classroom and their competitive arena. Expectations are high and personal challenges are around each corner. Opportunities are numerous and adequate resources may not be so easily recognized. To help student-athletes identify helpful resources and to succeed throughout their college experience, the Ann and Milton Stevenson Educational Center and the Iocolano-Petty Football Wing were created.
NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program
The CHAMPS/Life Skills Program was created to support the student development initiatives of its member institutions and to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience within the university setting. Participating institutions in the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program support a student-athlete's development in five areas: academics, athletics, personal development, career development and community service. Student-Athlete Services provide student-athletes the resources and direction in the following four areas.
Commitment to Academic Excellence
We focus on the enhancement of academic performance through the development of study and communication skills, goal setting, stress and time management, tutoring and mentoring. Academic performance is monitored for NCAA, BIG EAST and SU eligibility and degree advancement toward graduation. Terry MacDonald and Judy Kopp are available to assist student-athletes who may have a difficult time adjusting academically to college. They also coordinate the academic excellence component. Contact Terry MacDonald or Judy Kopp if you have any questions.
Commitment to Personal Development
This program provides the necessary information needed when tackling the topics and challenges facing today's student-athlete. This component covers such topics as to what it is like being a student-athlete at SU, social development (Changes, Challenges and Choices), personal health and fiscal responsibility. Information is provided in a way that student-athletes realize the value of participating in such programming and that it is a life lesson that will benefit them well after their time at SU. Contact Kevin Wall if you have any questions.
Commitment to Service
An important part of college life is the opportunity to give back to the campus and local community. Community service offers student-athletes opportunities to begin a lifelong habit of volunteerism by participating in a number of special projects. Student-athletes participating in the 'CUSE CARES Community Outreach Program visit local schools, hospitals, and have participated in events that include Special Olympics, the Ronald McDonald House, the United Way and Habitat for Humanity. For the past nine years student-athletes have been recognized as one of the top student groups on campus and have received the Chancellor's Award for Public Service. Contact Kevin Wall if you have any questions.
Commitment to Career Development
Career choice and direction play a crucial role in deciding a major, internship possibilities, potential graduate school selection, and eventually landing that first job after college. Our program assists student-athletes to identify career goals and aids with interviewing and job search skills. We can also provide assistance with preparation for graduate and/or professional school. The Manny Shemin Resource Room, located in the Stevenson Educational Center, provides many resources for career and graduate school exploration. Contact Kevin Wall if you have any questions.
